How Can I Try Out New Game Genres?

I want to try out new genres in 2026, but new games are so expensive and barely have demos. What can I do?

I’ve set myself the goal this year of trying some new game genres. I tend to get stuck in my ways; as an autistic person, familiar game styles and content can feel very comforting, but I want to expand the amount of games that I can talk about here on this blog!

This has led to a bit of a dilemma; new games are super expensive nowadays, and I find that a lot of games either don’t have demos at all or the demo doesn’t give me much of a chance to see if I’d like the game. You’re locked out of too many things, meaning the demo doesn’t give you a chance to get a feel for what the game is like. Some games have great demos and trials; I’ve written a couple of times about Final Fantasy XIV, which infamously has a fantastic free trial period that lets you experience the vast majority of the game. The Deltarune demo includes both Chapters 1 and 2, giving a solid amount of game time and just enough of a hook to keep new players invested. However, games that I want to try out have no demos or minimal demos, meaning I’m left unsure as to whether I want to fork out the money for it.

I love to hit up the second hand store for copies of old games; they’re still selling PS2 games!

There’s a couple of solutions I have thought of for this dilemma. Who says that the games I try out have to be new? I can try some classics that are also a different genre. I still have my original PS2 slim which turns 20 years old this year, but I can also have a go at using an emulator. This would allow me to try some games from consoles I never owned in the past such as the 3DS. I could also try my hand at some indie titles, as these tend to be lower in price. It’s also great to support smaller studios! Playing both retro and indie titles has become far more popular recently, especially with the high prices of AAA video games today. Finding new ways to enjoy games prevents it from becoming a hobby purely for privileged people. It also allows me to make use of tech I already have, rather than shelling out for a new console like a Switch 2. Win-win!

You may catch me writing about some older or indie titles on this blog; I’m currently saving for a car, so I need to spend on games wisely! I’d love to show some love for some underrated gems or classic games that I haven’t had a chance to experience. Watch this space!
